The opening round of the Nedbank Golf Challenge at the Gary Player Country Club on Thursday has been abandoned due to thunderstorms.

Having only returned to the course at 15:00 after a delay of nearly three hours, tournament officials once again called a halt to proceedings at 16:18 as ominous skies lurked in the Pilanesburg area.

The decision was then taken to call an end to the day’s play at 16:35.

Play will resume tomorrow at 07:30, with the groupings remaining the same for the second round.

Luke Donald remains the man to catch, as his outward nine of 31 saw him surge away from the chasing pack. He made two further pars to remain at five-under par before the siren sounded.

Two shots adrift at three under are the trio of Jamie Donaldson, Thomas Bjorn and Brendon de Jonge. The Zimbabwean got pulses racing as he holed out with a wedge for eagle at the ninth hole to complete a rollercoaster front nine of 33.

Defending champion Martin Kaymer also breached the three under mark after his two at the short fourth hole, but a bogey at the fifth has seen him fall back into sole possession of fifth.

One stroke further back are a group of seven players including South Africans Charl Schwartzel and Darren Fichardt on one under.
