SUN CITY, North West (8 November 2016) – The last South African to win the Nedbank Golf Challenge hosted by Gary Player was Trevor Immelman in 2007. Jaco van Zyl and his fellow South African professionals would love to change this at the Gary Player Country Club this week.

Van Zyl joins Louis Oosthuizen, Branden Grace, Charl Schwartzel, Richard Sterne, Brandon Stone, George Coetzee, Thomas Aiken and Retief Goosen as the South African contingent in this week’s US$7 million European Tour event.

Van Zyl came close to a major victory in this tournament last year when he went into the weekend one stroke off the lead of Henrik Stenson, and then stayed within reach as he entered the final round four strokes behind Marc Leishman.

A closing 78 ended his title hopes, but Van Zyl says he knows better what to expect this time around.

“It’s great to be back and be a part of this great event. Last year was great fun then I fell away a bit on the Sunday. But this year I know a bit more about what to expect and the nerves will be a lot less,” he said at the Gary Player Country Club on Tuesday.

Van Zyl, like all of his countrymen, is ready to make a concerted effort to keep the Nedbank Golf Challenge trophy at home when the tournament tees off on Thursday.

“When it comes to all the European Tour events we have down here, as South Africans we really feel we want to be victorious on our home soil.”

And he would certainly bet on his own chances this week.

“I came close last year. I’ve been hitting the ball really well for quite some time now. If I can get the putter going I feel like I’ll be in with a shout.”
